This type of folding knife is usually called an electrician’s knife. But it doesn’t seem to be exclusive to electricians. When I was a kid, many families, including mine, kept one around and used it as a fruit knife. My dad often used this kind of small knife to peel apples and pears for us.
There are two Chinese characters “上海” (Shanghai) engraved at the base of the blade. It’s a Shanghai – brand electrician’s knife. The bolster and the liner look really solid. The blade also seems pretty good. In the past, the words “Shanghai” were synonymous with “high – quality”. Originally, the knife was rusty all over, and there were chips on the blade. After a simple rust – removal process, I re – sharpened the blade. I changed the original straight cutting edge to a slightly upward – curving drop – point blade tip. It actually turned out quite well. When you fold the knife, the tip of the blade doesn’t stick out. The carbon – steel blade may not match the hardness of some super – steels, but you can easily sharpen it. For daily tasks like cutting fruits, its edge – retention is definitely sufficient. The size of this small knife is perfect for everyday carry (EDC). I’ve been keeping it in my pocket these days and can’t help but fiddle with it from time to time. It really makes me nostalgic for those old days when my dad peeled apples and shared them with us.
