Steve Dunn had been making knives as a hobby since 1988. In 1990, he participated in the training held by the American Bladesmith Society (ABS) in Washington and Arkansas and then began forging Damascus steel on his own. He became a Master Smith (MS) level bladesmith in 1994. In 2002, he started learning engraving at a school in Kansas, and by 2005, he had become a teacher at that school, which clearly demonstrated his learning and comprehension abilities. He was not only engaged in making knives but also did engraving work on firearms. Unfortunately, Steve passed away in May this year. He had previously served as the president of the American Bladesmith Society.
